Now I'm not big on breakfast cereals - there's just something about muesli being stuck in your teeth or soggy all bran flakes that just grinds me up the wrong way. I do however love love love my oats! Check out my "Quick & Easy" section for my homey, warm, fruity, nutty oat bowls. You will be forgiven, by me, if you ever assumed that most, if not all breakfast cereals are vegan-friendly because cereal is made up of maize, grains, wholewheat,

rice - ingredients that in their natural state are absolutely vegan. However, this is not the case with cereal as most cereals in the market contain vitamin D and this can be problematic when it comes to vegan-friendly cereals because the method of fortifying cereals with said vitamin D, involves lanolin, which is essentially a wax that is secreted from wool-bearing animals. There are two types of vitamin D found in cereal - vitamin D3, which is usually made from, well, sheep... and vitamin D2, which is made without any animal product and therefore vegan friendly. The problem is, most cereals and other fortified products do not specify which vitamin D they have used. So... after the initial shock of "wool in my cereal", it is quite obvious to see why a vegan, who advocates for animal rights, would not want to consume such a cereal. So always read the ingredients if this is the sort of thing that would piss you off. Equally, try to stay away from cereals that have been marketed as the "healthier or natural option" because they tend to use honey rather than sugar or artificial sweeteners to sweeten the taste. Now, the jury is still out about whether it is in fact healthier but what we do know - is that the bees are not pleased:)

Below I've included a collage of breakfast cereals that are currently vegan-friendly. Emphasis on CURRENTLY.

Please comment with our cereals that you know are vegan and I'll make sure to include them.
