If you're having a particularly hard time letting go of meat and animal products and want to include vegan meat options in your diet then you are in luck because there are more plant-based meat options than ever before. The options I've included below are available at Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Checkers and Spar - each store carries a different brand depending on its location so just do some research to see which stores closest to you, carries which brand. With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to figure out which ones to try first, and trust - you're going to want to try out a few because they all taste differently.

The Beyond Burger is the closest plant-based burger to ground beef, that you can find in the market right now. It is juicy, succulent and the fact that it looks like ground beef - cooks like ground beef, will freak you out! But I can assure you, it is definitely plant-based and contains 20g of protein, free of soy, gluten, cholesterol, GMO, hormones and antibiotics. Just simply, a mouthwatering super-food!

When I first tasted a meat alternative back in 2009, it was from the Fry's Family range.

The Fry's family hold a special place in my heart because of cause they're a South Africa product and I'm very patriotic but also because their range is very affordable. My best friend and I lived on Fry's back in varsity because their prices accommodated our non-existent budget. They are also widely available, unlike The Beyond Burger which you can mostly find at Woolies (well at least in my area). Their range includes burgers, sausages, nuggets, seafood, pizza, roast, snacks, pastries and pies. We are really spoilt for choice - thanks to this local family.

I was excited to learn that Woolworths has also launched their delicious range of vegan ready-meals. What is even more exciting is that they developed them, working together with the Fry’s family. How exciting? The products all contain plant-based meat alternatives, and are both delicious and satisfying. Woolworths doesn't compromise on quality and flavour so believe me when I say that their range is amazing! Their range is cholesterol free and is mage from crushed wheat, beans, chickpeas, butternut, spinach and the seasoning is top notch. Check them out!

The Spar home brand offers a frozen, crumbed, uncooked veggie burger option. I believe this is the only one that is suitable for vegans as their other meat alternatives may contain eggs (I stand to be corrected). This is the only one that I've ever tried from Spar - its a delicious potato based alternative, filled with a variety of vegetables. It reminds of a potato samoosa:)

Came across this brand whilst shopping at Checkers. I always sample the burger options first before I try the rest of the product range. Burgers always give me a good indication of whether or not the brand is good or not. I really enjoyed the Quorn Vegan Hot & Spicy Burgers. I love that you can immediately see from their packaging that they are meat free, egg free, soy free and dairy free - saving you time from investigating the back of the packaging. When prepared correctly, the patty is crunchy on the outside and moist inside.

There are many other plant-based meat alternatives available but I chose the ones that are easily accessible from our supermarkets, where we normally do our groceries. Feel free to comment with other brands that you have tried or have come across.
